Tomorrow, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will receive an update on safety improvements at Whiteman Airport and consider a motion directing the County to move several important safety initiatives forward.
The motion calls for:
-
Quarterly pilot safety seminars.
-
Runway and taxiway pavement improvements.
-
Expanded community outreach and public education.
The motion is focused on improving safety. It does not propose closing Whiteman Airport, reducing airport operations, or changing the airport’s long term future.
What the motion doesn’t do is just as important. It makes no mention of pursuing available FAA funding that could help pay for many of these improvements. Instead, Los Angeles County taxpayers could be left footing the bill for projects that may qualify for federal aviation funding.
At a time when the County is facing serious budget challenges, taxpayers shouldn’t be asked to shoulder costs that could potentially be covered, at least in part, through existing FAA programs.
TAKE ACTION TODAY
Tomorrow’s discussion is about more than safety improvements. It’s about the future of Whiteman Airport and ensuring the Board of Supervisors hears from the people who rely on, support, and value this community asset.
Supervisor Horvath and the other members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors need to hear that there is broad community support for preserving, improving, and modernizing Whiteman Airport.
