Outdated Committee, Ignored Communities

Public pressure is now forcing movement. On Friday, Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath directed the Department of Public Works to take immediate action on safety at Whiteman Airport, including:

  • Identifying immediate actions the County can take to strengthen safety at Whiteman Airport, building on recommendations from the Community Advisory Committee

  • Reporting back within 7 days with timelines, costs, and funding options

  • Clarifying responsibilities across the FAA, NTSB, Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles, and LADWP

However, it is troubling that Supervisor Horvath continues to rely on recommendations from a Community Advisory Committee formed in 2020. That committee is out dated. At the time, several members were openly aligned with efforts to shut down Whiteman Airport, raising clear concerns about bias. Relying on that committee today, years after it disbanded, is not a credible reflection of current community sentiment.

Multiple San Fernando Valley neighborhood councils, including the Pacoima Neighborhood Council, have formally voted to support keeping Whiteman Airport open. These are elected bodies representing hundreds of thousands of residents.

Those councils are current. They are accountable. And they reflect the San Fernando Valley today.

If this is truly a community driven effort, then current, representative voices must be prioritized over an expired committee shaped by advocacy interests.

Supervisor Horvath: Safety Demanded, Funding Frozen

In recent weeks, media coverage has begun to take a more complete look at Whiteman Airport and the issues surrounding its future. This shift has been driven in part by the Whiteman Airport Coalition’s efforts to bring accurate information and facts into the public conversation.

For years, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has withheld millions in critical federal funding designated for safety improvements and modernization, despite the airport’s essential role in emergency response, wildfire support, and public safety.

Tomorrow’s meeting and Horvath’s call for accountability is long overdue. But it also highlights a clear contradiction:  Supervisor Horvath is now calling for urgent action while continuing to withhold federal funds already available for those purposes.
