LA County Review Signals Shift From Closure Politics to Modernization and Investment
The Whiteman Airport Coalition welcomes the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works’ recommendation to pursue federal funding for critical improvements at Whiteman Airport.
The County’s report on safety enhancements at Whiteman Airport makes clear there is no evidence the airport was operating under unsafe conditions prior to the April 20 accident, which remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration.

The County’s report calls for investments in pilot education, airfield improvements, and community engagement, priorities the Whiteman Airport Coalition has long supported. The proposed runway and taxiway rehabilitation program, pilot safety seminars, and expanded FAA coordination reflect the importance of maintaining strong, federally compliant aviation infrastructure serving the San Fernando Valley.
Federal investment in Whiteman Airport reflects its continued importance to local and regional safety and emergency response.
COMMUNITY AND PUBLIC SAFETY ASSET
The Coalition remains committed to working with the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, residents, local officials, aviation stakeholders, and federal partners to ensure the airport continues serving the region responsibly and effectively. We have again seen just how important Whiteman Airport is to the community over the past several weeks as brush fires burned across Southern California and emergency air operations crews responded to protect homes and neighborhoods.

Los Angeles County Fire Department air operations crews worked to help save homes during the Sandy Fire in Simi Valley, underscoring the importance of maintaining regional emergency air operations capacity. Those crews quickly dispatched from the Barton Heliport on the Whiteman Airport complex.

The community also understands the value of Whiteman Airport. All San Fernando Valley neighborhood councils, including the Pacoima Neighborhood Council, have formally voted to support keeping Whiteman Airport open. These elected bodies represent hundreds of thousands of residents and reflect the San Fernando Valley today.
